Find Dog Training Courses

by Lawanda B. Fuqua

When you were a kid, having a wild dog for a pet was probably not so bad for you. You always had someone to blame little “accidents” on, but now that you’ve gained a few years and some little wisdom. Plus, it’s YOUR stuff getting destroyed now, so the novelty has worn off. It’s time to look into professional help. Choosing the appropriate dog training course can be difficult, but with these tips you should be able to find the “best fit” for both of you.

Ignore the people who try to tell you that a dog doesn’t need training. Chances are if they even have pets, the animals have dominion over the home. You have to think about your children’s safety. And trained dogs are typically less likely to last out than untrained ones. Besides, what fun are you, or the kids, going to have walking a dog that wants to pull you all over the place. You chose a dog because you wanted a fun companion for the kids, not a weapon of home destruction.

Why is the course material going to work for you? You should think about how you like to learn. Do you want to be guided gently, or allowed to explore topics at your own pace? Or do you prefer step-by-step? Do you pick up on ideas more easily when you have read them or seen them demonstrated?

Having discovered the best way for you to learn, it’s time to research your options. You can go back to the place that sold you your dog for ideas, especially if you went through a dog breeder, because they typically have gained a lot of experience through entering dog shows. Consider researching online for dog training courses as well.

A great choice for dog training courses is not so obvious, but quite helpful. Check out the local animal shelter and talk to the volunteers there. They give their time because they love animals and usually know quite a lot about with hard cases.

You can visit dog parks, or other locales that dog owners and their charges frequent. Watch for well-behaved dogs and approach the owner. Ask how they went about training their dogs. The answers you receive this way may be quite different from the breeder’s and that will help you to tailor your experience to you and your dog.

For the over-worked, or just for the sake of comfort you might want to forego a dog school all together in favor of books or videos. The options there are almost endless, so be careful and read reviews. Make sure you take your time with this method and you’ll do fine.
