Three Questions That Can Help You To Become An Expert In Any Field
January 18th, 2008How would you like to be able to learn any subject quickly and easily using just a few questions to get you started?
I have developed a simple method that I use whenever I need to master a subject quickly and become an expert in it. This simple technique has helped me learn difficult subjects quickly and easily that I would have otherwise struggled with.
You still need to do the work of actually learning your chosen subject but this technique will dramatically cut down on wasted time and effort by focusing your attention on gaps in your knowledge that can be quickly plugged.
The method revolves around two simple questions that you must answer as fully as possible. The questions simply throw light on what areas you need to concentrate upon in order to move you towards becoming an expert in that field.
The first question is simply “What do I know?”
Write down in short sentences, everything that you know about the subject you are studying. Use bullet points to mark each point. Each thing that you know only needs to have a few words written for it. For example, if the subject is “The British Isles” I might write down “England Capital - London”.
Keep writing down everything you know. Its important that you don’t miss anything out.
When you are first starting out learning a subject you will find that will probably know a few basic facts about it. Write them down.
You will also probably think you know some things but are not totally sure about them. Write these down with a question mark after them so that you know to revisit them. For example “England Capital - London ?”
Once you have done the first part of the exercise you should be quite surprised at what you do know about it. Especially if the subject you are studying is quite broad. You will also find that you get curious about the things that you don’t and your desire to learn them will increase.
The second question is simply “What do I need to know to become an expert in this subject?”
Again run through the exercise writing down all the things that you would need to know in order to be regarded as an expert in that field. Don’t forget to put in important people you might need to know about. Important facts that you will need to know. History of the subject. Put down everything you can think of that you will need to know to master the subject.
Once you have completed these two exercises you should have a much clearer idea of the gaps in your knowledge that you need to plug.
For larger subjects, it is worth running through this exercise several times. Firstly, because you will be recalling information that you have learned and you will tend remember it better. Secondly, because your progress will become apparent and this will give you the impetus needed to continue studying.
The third question you can ask is “What one aspect of this subject would give me the greatest benefit if I knew it now?”
This question will help you to prioritize your learning and will focus you so that you spend time learning the more important things rather than wasting time learning information that isn’t as valuable. This is a great way to speed up your learning so that you can quickly become an expert on the subject you are learning.
I hope you find these techniques as useful as I have found them and I wish you success in your endeavors.
