Homemade Dog Food - Meatloaf

IIf you’ve ever checked your pantry to see you’ve already used the last tin of dog food, and the dry food barrel is empty, you can make and freeze some dog food ready for when it’s needed. And with the ever increasing cost of living nowadays, this is one way to not only use up any scraps you have, but it also means your dog doesn’t need to miss out on the gourmet meal it deserves.

While I prefer minced meat, you can use finely diced or chopped meat.

Often pet mince can be purchased from a butcher at a very reasonable price, because you will be able to freeze this you can use as much or as little as you like, it’s pretty much a slap-dash type of recipe: use what you have or how much you want.

If you were to use say 1 kilogram of pet mince.

Put the mince in a large saucepan and slowly cook it.
While it is heating start adding any other ingredients you have on hand:
A cup or so of frozen or fresh vegetables (carrots are particularly good, ‘specially if your dog is a little overweight)
Some rice
Keep stirring it
Add in some water (that amount will vary depending on how much mince and other ingredients you use – but generally a cup or two)
Add in some gelatin (again this amount will vary but say a half a cup or so)
Keep stirring while it’s simmering, once it has started to blend in and thicken etc, pour into a large tray.
Place the tray in the fridge to cool.
Once it’s cool it will have become a solid block (like meatloaf)
Remove the food from the tray.
From there you can cut it into meal size blocks and place in bags or other containers and freeze.

When you’re ready to feed your dog, you can just give him the meatloaf or mix it with dry food or other table scraps.
